The African Grey Project at Birds of Eden
Project Overview:
The African Grey Project at Birds of Eden provides a compassionate solution for African Grey Parrots coming from the pet industry. Our initiative aims to offer these ex-pet birds a safe, natural, and enriching environment where they can live freely, surrounded by others of their kind.
Why the Project is Vital:
African Grey Parrots, among the world’s most popular pets, have faced severe consequences due to their popularity. Trapping and habitat destruction have drastically diminished their wild populations. South Africa, the largest breeder and exporter of African Greys globally, produces a staggering number of these birds each year, with many destined for cramped, solitary cages. This confinement is far removed from their natural social structures and behaviours.
The Harsh Reality:
The life of many African Greys in captivity is distressing. Often kept alone in small cages, these highly social birds are deprived of the companionship and space they need. With a potential lifespan of over 60 years, their prolonged confinement can lead to severe stress, feather plucking, and other behavioural issues. Many eventually become unwanted due to the challenges of their care, resulting in frequent requests for sanctuary.
The Project's Solution:
To address these issues, Birds of Eden has constructed a large, landscaped enclosure specifically for African Grey Parrots. This habitat allows them to interact with other greys and fly freely in a safe, protected environment. The first aviary, measuring 30m x 30m x 4.4m high, has been built with durability in mind to withstand the birds' natural behaviours.
Current Needs and Call to Action:
Our existing African Grey aviary is nearing full capacity. To continue providing this vital sanctuary, we urgently need to raise R800,000 that we need to repay for the construction of another similar structure. This additional space will ensure that more African Greys can enjoy the freedom and social interaction they deserve. To assist with this project you can donate here
Surrendering Your African Grey:
If you have an African Grey Parrot that you can no longer care for, Birds of Eden offers a compassionate solution. We invite you to surrender your parrot to our sanctuary, where it will join a community of other greys and enjoy a fulfilling life. To arrange for surrender or for more information, please contact our Group Curator, Isabel Wentzel, at curator@saasa.org.za.
How You Can Help:
Your support is crucial in providing these remarkable birds with a forever home. We are seeking various forms of assistance to help build the new aviary, including:
- Materials: Steel, mesh, concrete, and trees.
- Skilled Labour: Expertise for construction and maintenance.
- Fundraising: Assistance with organizing and running fundraising campaigns.
- Financial Donations: Cash contributions to directly fund the construction and development of the new aviary.
Your contributions, whether in materials, skills, time, or money, will directly aid in maintaing this new aviary where African Greys can live freely and without the constraints of the pet trade. Every bit of support helps us make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Please consider how you might assist this essential cause. Your generosity will ensure these birds, let down by human actions, can finally experience the life they truly deserve.
