Birds of Eden
The awe-inspiring Birds of Eden is the largest free-flight aviary in the world. The sanctuary encompasses 2.3ha of partly forested land, covered by a 3.2ha mesh and with a 1.2km walkway. Visitors are welcome to explore at their own pace or should they prefer - request a guided tour at no extra cost. The sanctuary is home to 220 different species & subspecies of birds totalling over 3500 birds. From the indigenous and beautiful Knysna lourie with its awkward call for such a gracious bird, the other lourie (Turaco) species, parrots, parakeets, waterfowl, flamingos, starlings, robins and graceful cranes. The sanctuary includes a deep gorge with a waterfall and the aviary is approximately 50m high, covering all the treetops and allowing ample flying space for its winged inhabitants. This is certainly one of the places you must visit when in the Garden Route! You can spend an entire day in the aviary as there are ample benches to sit on and enjoy the birds in flight. Monkeyland
The world's first free-roaming, multi-species Primate Sanctuary, where if you are lucky, you will hear the Howlers do their daily call or the Gibbons serenade nature or maybe even the Black and White Ruffed lemurs doing a location call through the sanctuary. Monkeyland is a forever home to ex-captive primates from closed down zoo’s, parks, or even ex-pets. Over 550 apes, monkeys and lemurs live at Monkeyland. On a visit to Monkeyland one of the most experienced primate guides in South Africa will take you on a 1 hour guided tour through the forest. During the tour the guides will point out the array of primates living out their natural lives in the 12-ha indigenous forest and regal you with stories about them as well as some fun facts. You will be given ample time to take photos and ask question. A little known fact is that the ticket is a day ticket and you can do as many tours during the day as you like and time allows. If you require your guided tour not to be in English but in Afrikaans or French then please book this at least 48 hours in advance to ensure availability. Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary
Admire magnificent and majestic big cats of the world – Lions, Tigers, Leopards, and Jaguars. The animals - at their forever home – Jukani, have been rescued or re homed from facilities that could no longer care for them. At Jukani they can now explore their large natural habitat, designed, and built around each individual animal’s needs. They are free of exploitation and the stress caused by human interaction. They can be appreciated and photographed in all their magnificence. On your 90-minute walking safari with one of our entertaining and knowledgeable guides you will also find Raccoons, a Honey badger, Caracal, some Zebra and Springbok as well as ferocious predators such as the Spotted Hyena. The lightning-fast Cheetah and agile tree climbing Pumas are a delight to see. If you would like to spend extra time in the sanctuary self-guided tours are also available where you can walk at your own leisure with one of our handy maps as a guide to help you identify the animals with ease. Hidden Forest Wildlife Sanctuary
The newest addition to the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA), is the largest free-roaming, multi-specie primate sanctuary in Africa and SAASA’s first sanctuary in KwaZulu-Natal. Our sanctuary is currently home to 7 different species of rescued exotic primates. A variety of indigenous wildlife occur naturally in our stunning 23-hectare forest, including Natal Duiker, Blue Duiker, Bushbuck, Vervets and Thick-Tailed Bush Babies as well as a huge variety of birdlife.
Visitors are transported on safari vehicles from our reception site to our forest where they will be met by their guide. On the guided walk of our forest, which takes around an hour, visitors will learn about our species’ unique behaviours and characteristics and the threats and challenges they face in the wild and in captivity. Tours are offered in English and depart from our reception approximately every 30 minutes.
