Our mission is that guests leave our sanctuaries (Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani) with a greater understanding of the World's wildlife and the threats they are facing. One of our main goals is to educate the public about the adverse effects of keeping wild animals as pets, in terms of both physical and psychological health. Also important is to teach visitors about the rapid decline of natural habitats due to logging, mining, agriculture and human settlements. We encourage the visiting public to buy goods wisely, ranging from second-hand or antique wood-products, to pharmaceuticals and cosmetics that were not tested on animals. The custodian of all the primates and birds whom live at Monkeyland and Birds of Eden is called The South African Animal sanctuary Alliance or SAASA
The South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) is constituted under Section 21 of the Companies Act as a PBO 2000/000667/08. We are a body which strives to improve the lives of caged primates and birds. We simultaneously strive to challenge and change legislation which allows and/or supports trading in primates, birds and apex cat species.
OUR MISSION IS:
- To encourage understanding and commitment to the conservation of the World's wildlife - especially primates, birds and apex cats.
- To communicate the need for healthy natural habitats; and recognition of the animals need for interdependence of people, their natural environment and its component resources.
- We are committed to reaching and engaging the largest number of people possible to enable them, through knowledge and understanding, to develop the motivation and skills to make informed choices about their lives in relation to the wise use of the natural resources around them.
The South African Animal Alliance (SAASA) provides the primates, birds and other wildlife it cares for with a stable environment, one with permanence and where there is definitely no exploitation.
At SAASA, care exceeds the regulations regarding animal welfare. The SAASA sanctuaries Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani is, most importantly, a place where primates, birds and other species of wildlife are rehabilitated both physically and emotionally. At SAASA we strive to achieve an effective balance between conservation and economic reality. It is therefore tourism driven and totally sustainable. A primate, bird and/or apex cat safari is much more than just an unforgettable forest or animal adventure; it is the vehicle that allows you to become part of our rehabilitation and care process.
It is because of sanctuaries such as Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani which go beyond idealism, and who strive to do something positive, that we can look forward to a more optimistic future.
