Birds of Eden is the
monumental eco project nearing completion
a few kilometres east of Plettenberg
Bay in The Garden Route. It is a project
inspired and created by the people
who built Monkeyland,
the little primate sanctuary next
door.
The main objective of both Monkeyland
and Birds of Eden is to provide a
natural and safe environment where
previously caged pet birds and primates
can have a second chance in life and
enjoy freedom. Interestingly, Birds
of Eden is the World’s largest
single span aviary and as result thereof
it’s is going to place South
Africa in the media spotlight both
nationally and internationally. The
curators working for Birds of Eden
will start introducing the initial
feathered residents early September
2005, and the public will be able
to visit from the 1st of November
2005.
Why is Birds of Eden so special?
The sanctuary will provide a better
life for 2 000+ previously caged birds.
Furthermore Birds of Eden is larger
than the UK millennium dome; and from
an architectural and engineering point
of view the 2.3 hectare, 80 ton structure
with its 1.2km of walkways, 200 seater
amphitheatre, and walk-behind waterfall,
is jaw dropping.
At first a large variety of both
indigenous and exotic birds will be
introduced into the sanctuary, however
Birds of Eden will eventually be home
to the largest collection of free-flight
African birds in the World.
So when you sit down and plan your
summer vacation, be sure to include
this eco mega park in your holiday
itinerary.
